This is an expansion. It cannot be played on its own. If you need the core rules first, start with how to play Mission to Planet Hexx.
Beyond adds 88 cards and several new systems on top of the base game: tokens, boosters, all-play and hybrid hexes, surprise maps, new icons, and mega mission files that stretch your win condition from six sides to eight.
Setup
Add the 76 game hexes to the base game and shuffle the whole deck together.
You can also build a custom deck from any mix of base and expansion hexes. The recommended starting ratio is:
| Type | Count |
|---|---|
| Aliens | 20 |
| Dilemmas | 20 |
| Objects | 20 |
| Planets | 24 |
| Space hexes | 31 |
Treat that as a baseline rather than a rule — experimenting with the mix is part of the point.
The rest of setup matches the base game, with one change: the first player adds a third space hex to the starting layout, chosen from the specific hexes the expansion designates for this.
Mega Mission Files
For a longer game, connect two of the new mission cards along their circuit edges to form a mega mission with eight upload sides instead of six.
Two things to get right:
- The text must face up. Each card has a distinct left and right side.
- They join via the circuits. If you are not building a mega mission, use the sides without circuits.
The Control Panel
Your control panel is everything in front of you: your mission file uploads plus your dashboard, which holds tokens.
This matters because several new effects target the control panel as a whole rather than one specific area.
Tokens
When you play a token, put it on your dashboard, where it stays in play until your next turn.
Tokens on your dashboard are automatically deleted at the beginning of your next turn, after any beginning-of-turn effects have resolved.
If a hex tells you to delete a token from your control panel, you choose which one — from anywhere on the panel, dashboard or uploads.
Boosters
A booster grants a continuous effect once it has been uploaded to a mission file.
If a hex tells you to delete a booster, you must pick one from anywhere in your control panel — including your uploads. Boosters are not safe just because they have been uploaded.
New Hex Types
All-play hexes
An all-play hex begins with normal text that the active player carries out, followed by italic text that every player must do — starting with the active player and continuing to the next.
Hybrid hexes
Some hexes carry multiple categories and types. When you play a hybrid, you choose exactly one category and perform that action. The other category is then ignored.
This has a sharp tactical consequence. If the active player plays a hybrid as a map, an opponent’s hex that cancels events cannot touch it — because it was never played as an event.
The types on a hybrid hex behave differently: they are always active, can be targeted by other hexes, and can be used as uploads.
Surprise map hexes
These follow the normal rules for map hexes but can also be played as a surprise — including on another player’s turn. Some of them go further and let you play an additional surprise during that same player’s turn.
New Icons
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Continuous | This map hex affects the galaxy continuously while it remains in play. |
| Disintegrate | Discard a map hex from the galaxy. If your ship is on a hex that gets disintegrated, you are out of the game permanently. |
| Roll on the die | Refers to the exact number rolled, before any modifiers are applied. |
Glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Delete | Discard a hex from the control panel. |
| Automatic roll | A notional die roll — you do not physically roll for it, you just take the stated value. |
| Straight line | Continuously connected adjacent hexes without changing direction at any point. |
| Replace | When an event hex replaces another hex, the replaced card does not go to the discard pile. |
| Disconnected map hex | A map hex cut off from the galaxy stays where it is until another map hex reconnects it. |
Common Mistakes
- Playing this without the base game. It is an expansion and has no standalone mode.
- Assuming uploaded boosters are safe. A delete-booster effect can reach into your uploads.
- Forgetting tokens expire. Dashboard tokens are wiped at the start of your next turn, after beginning-of-turn effects — so use them.
- Trying to use both halves of a hybrid. You pick one category and the other is ignored, though the hex’s types stay active either way.
- Cancelling the wrong category. A hybrid played as a map cannot be cancelled by an event-cancelling hex.
- Parking on a fragile hex. Disintegrate removes a map hex from the galaxy, and a ship standing on it is eliminated for good.
- Applying modifiers to a die-roll icon. That icon reads the raw number rolled, before modification.
- Tidying away disconnected hexes. They stay on the table until something reconnects them.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you play Beyond Mission to Planet Hexx on its own?
- No. It is an expansion of 88 cards and requires the base game to play. If you are new, learn Mission to Planet Hexx first.
- What is a mega mission file?
- An optional longer game where you connect two of the new mission cards along their circuit edges, giving you eight upload sides to fill instead of six. Make sure the text faces up, as each card has a distinct left and right side.
- What is the control panel?
- Everything in front of you — your mission file uploads plus your dashboard, which holds tokens. Several expansion effects target the control panel as a whole, so a delete effect can reach your uploads as well as your dashboard.
- How long do tokens last?
- Until the beginning of your next turn. Tokens sitting on your dashboard are automatically deleted then, after any beginning-of-turn effects have resolved.
- How do hybrid hexes work?
- A hybrid carries more than one category. When you play it you choose a single category and the other is ignored for that play — which also means a hex that cancels events cannot cancel a hybrid played as a map. The hex's types remain active regardless and can still be targeted or uploaded.
- What does disintegrate do?
- It discards a map hex from the galaxy. It is the harshest effect in the expansion: if your ship happens to be on the hex that gets disintegrated, you are eliminated from the game permanently.
- What happens if a map hex becomes disconnected from the galaxy?
- Nothing immediately. It stays exactly where it is until another map hex is placed to reconnect it.
- What is the recommended deck ratio for a custom deck?
- Twenty aliens, twenty dilemmas, twenty objects, twenty-four planets and thirty-one space hexes. It is a starting point rather than a rule — mixing your own combinations is encouraged.
